Article is from: Yang Rongsu, PPI from Shangmenglian
In October, 2022, the Scientific Parenting and Child Development project settled in Shangmenglian Community, Tengchong City, which set off a wave of ‘scientific parenting’ in the local area, and Yang Rongsu also met a 2-year-old boy: Xiaoxiao.
When she first came into contact with Xiaoxiao, Yang Rongsu found that Xiaoxiao was in a very stable mood compared with other children. He could play in the parent-child game activity center all day without crying or making trouble. However, with the gradual in-depth contact with Xiaoxiao, Yang Rongsu found that Xiaoxiao developed more slowly than other children of the same age in talking, running, answering and responding. Subsequently, in the first "children's assessment" evaluation activity organized by the project, the test results confirmed that Xiaoxiao did have the problem of developmental retardation compared with children of the same age.
After learning the evaluation results, Yang Rongsu communicated with Xiaoxiao's mother, hoping that Xiaoxiao's mother can lead Xiaoxiao to participate in the parent-child game activity center, and gain some potential development by integrating children into the group and imitating others. During the conversation, Yang Rongsu learned that Xiaoxiao's father works outside the home all the year round, and only his mother can take care of Xiaoxiao at home. However, Xiaoxiao's mother needs to carry out farming activities in addition to taking care of Xiaoxiao, and Xiaoxiao's home is three kilometers away from the parenting and play center. Xiaoxiao's mother is not very willing to lead Xiaoxiao to the parent-child game activity center to participate in activities.
With the help of Dong Baoyan, the project manager, Yang Rongsu made a home visit plan for Xiaoxiao and her mother based on her professional knowledge. The content of the plan is mainly to communicate with Xiaoxiao's mother, listen and understand, combine games, interact and guide personally, and let Yang Rongsu take time with her child and in this way connect the family closer. At the same time, after the evaluation, the expert team of the kindergarten affiliated to Kunming University also knows about Xiaoxiao. On the basis of home visits, the expert team and the project personnel established an online rehabilitation guidance group, which guided Yang Rongsu to learn lesson plans and design games, and made online rehabilitation guidance for Xiaoxiao.
Through the combination of online rehabilitation guidance and offline home visit guidance, Xiaoxiao has made remarkable progress from being afraid of strangers, crying loudly and slurring speech during the first home visit to smiling, greeting and even learning to call dad when he met Yang Rongsu during the second home visit.
When Xiaoxiao's mother learned that Xiaoxiao was delayed in his development, she took Xiaoxiao to the local maternal and child health center for a comprehensive examination. While cooperating with the doctor's rehabilitation plan, she listened to the opinions of the project personnel, spent as much time as possible with Xiaoxiao, and ensured that she would go to the parenting and play center two or three times a week, so that Xiaoxiao could better integrate into the group and establish contact with other children.
Nowadays, Xiaoxiao's ability of running and jumping has obviously developed after receiving rehabilitation counseling from project personnel and expert team and participating in the activities of parenting and play center. He also can imitate some simple music rhythm games in the parenting and play center, say hello to Yang Rongsu when she comes to the parenting and play center, and say goodbye politely when she leaves. Xiaoxiao's mother said that Xiaoxiao became cheerful at home, and he would learn to speak, dance and sing by herself.
"I am very grateful to the teachers and experts of the parent-child game activity center for their help. If it weren't for this activity center and teacher Yang Rongsu, I might not have found the problem of children's developmental retardation. In the future, I will take more smiles to the parenting and play center to participate in game activities" Xiaoxiao’s mom said.
There are many children who are just like Xiaoxiao, and some children have the problem of slow development because their caregivers do not pay enough attention to
their physical and mental care. The entry of the Scientific Parenting and Child Development project and the establishment of the parenting and play center have solved the problems of unattended children and parents unable to learn the knowledge of scientific parenting for local infants and their families aged 0-4, and helped children and their families get changes.
I hope to find more "Xiaoxiao" in the future, and give effective intervention and parent-child companionship guidance to children in remote mountain villages.
