Author: Zhang Yanming, a parenting and play instructor in Longchao village

My name is Zhang Yanming, from Longchao Village, Tengchong City.

In my hometown, it is a common phenomenon that most parents choose to go out for work after their children are born, and these children are almost completely raised by their grandparents. There are not many places for entertainment in the village, and the most common way for villagers to bring up their children is gather them at the village entrance and let them chase each other and play, or simply stay at home and watch TV, phones and other electronic devices.

In March, a group of people came to the village saying they wanted to establish a parenting and play center in the village. I and the villagers didn’t understand, only grasped that the village would soon be more than a good place for children to play. Later the parenting and play center began to recruit a parenting and play instructor (PPI) and the village committee contacted me. I applied for the position as PPI out of curiosity, still not knowing that the parenting and play center to be established in the village would be what kind of place.

Longchao Village parenting and play center is supported by Yao & Han Fund and implemented by HPP.

Before the launch of the project, I participated in pre-job training, visited other parenting and play centers, and learned from professional childcare centers. The pre-job training let me see that children in other early education institutions are so lively and energetic. At the same time, it also let me know more about early education knowledge, the importance of early education, and how to develop children's sensory perception, movement, language, cognition, emotion and self-care ability.

After the start of the project, batches of new toys and picture books soon entered the parenting and play center. Under the call of the village committee, the villagers brought their children to the parenting and play center. They were very happy to have a place for their children to play. The parenting and play center is open 4 days a week, 5 hours a day.

By carrying out the activities, I cultivate my children's interests and talents. I set up activities such as painting, handicraft, music, etc., so that they can find their potential in learning. We also payattention to children's health and organize parent-child play activities so that they can grow up in warmth and care.

Duing the work, I might also meet parents who ask me: "Teacher Zhang, what is the use of doing these activities, why don't you let the children play with toys by themselves, and then go home when it is time?"

I knew that most parents just regard the activity center as a safe place to temporarily place their children, and have not really understood the significance of the existence of parenting and play centers. So I paid more attention to daily routine activities, arranged rich and interesting activities for the children, and regularly organized parents to learn scientific parenting theories and methods in the activity center, so that parents clearly understood that their children go to the parenting and play center not only for play, but also for better development of their children.

With the advancement of the project, with the efforts of all parties, obvious changes have taken place in the children and parents of the parenting and play center in Longchao Village in the past six months. The smiles on the children's faces have increased and they have become more confident. Parents also know more about early education, know how to guide their children in a scientific way, and are more willing to take their children to the parenting and play center, no longer just think it is a simple "safe place nursery".

Nowadays, the parent-child activity center has become the place with the most laughter in Longchao Village. I will continue to learn to bring more knowledge and laughter to children and parents.
