Yang Meixian, a native of Tengchong, majored in preschool education. After graduating in 1997, she joined the central kindergarten in Wuhe Township, Tengchong. After 27 years, Mrs. Yang still sticks to the front line of rural preschool education.

Mrs. Yang's job in kindergarten is to lead children to carry out daily activities such as leading children to sing, dance and play some simple games. In the kindergarten Mrs. Yang created the corner with simple tools and materials, but after a period of time, Mrs. Yang found that the activities in the corner were chaotic and the children gradually lost interest.

"How to carry out educational corner games well" has become a difficult problem encountered by Teacher Yang in preschool education.

Based on the work of HPP in preschool education in rural areas of Tengchong, the project team conducted field research in Tengchong twice in December 2022 and February 2023 to understand the situation and needs of rural preschool teachers through questionnaires and interviews.

In rural preschool classes, the types and quantities of materials in the corners  most often are insufficient. Usually, there are only 1-2 cabinets in the preschool classes. There are 1-2 boxes of snowflakes and building blocks on the cabinets, and the others are empty. You can also see that there are only a few pots of green plants brought by teachers or children from home on the cabinet; some of the materials in the corner of the preschool classes are not in line with children's ability level. There are some books on the cupboard, which are all reading books suitable for children of primary school and above, and few picture books or picture books suitable for children of 3-6 years old can be seen.

From the survey results, we find that play-based learning and educational corner games are the most urgent needs in the current rural preschool education situation, which has been mentioned many times in the report. The lack of teaching aids, insufficient activity corners and insufficient skills of village teachers to play corner games are all feedback from the survey.

Based on the project foundation of the project team in Tengchong, the project team hopes to combine the training plan for core teachers of the POF with the three-year training plan for teachers, support the role change of core teachers from trainees to trainers while continuing to improve their professional skills, tap the endogenous strength of the project area, and continuously drive the growth of village-level preschool teachers.

In September, 2023, with the support of the Beijing Office of the Macao Tong Chai Charity Association and the Kunming Good Deed Public Welfare Community Development Service Center (KGD) HPP started the implementation of the Tengchong Rural Preschool Teachers Empowerment Project in Yunnan Province.

The project aims to improve the educational capacity of 30 rural preschools teachers through training the core preschool teachers in the townships to support the working methods of preschool teachers in the village, and to improve the capacity of the preschool teachers in the area of corner play activities as an entry point to solve the lack of educational capacity of preschool teachers in the rural areas and the lack of training opportunities, as well as the problem of the poor quality of the pre-school education in the rural areas.

As a teacher of Wuhe Township Central Kindergarten and a core teacher, Yang Meixian became one of the participants in this project, and participated in a three-day core teacher training every quarter. After each training, Mrs. Yang carefully summarizes the main points of knowledge and writes notes. At the same time, Mrs. Yang can also get the quarterly on-the-spot teaching supervision support from the project team.

Mrs. Yang said: "Since the project was launched, the trainer, Mr. Feng Li, has given me a lot of help. After his explanation, I have learned a lot about educational corner activities, such as the spatial layout of activities, the materials put in, the process of activities, matters needing attention and so on. Through systematic training, I have integrated the theory I have learned into practice, and I have encountered many problems during this period. In the careful explanation and exploration practice of Mr. Feng, I have gradually improved myself. "

Under the guidance of the trainer, Mrs. Yang combined the characteristics of Wuhe Township as an Dai nationality people hometown, and carried out a lively and interesting activity of "Dai nationality culture entering the campus". Mrs. Yang invited the inheritors of Dai nationality culture in the local village to give guidance. Accompanied by cucurbits and Dai nationality songs on campus, children and parents danced enthusiastically, and everyone felt the charm of Dai nationality traditional culture together.

In addition to receiving support and training, Mrs. Yang also has a responsibility to promote the development of local rural preschool teachers.

Yang Meixian and two village-level preschool teachers, Shang Boai and Chen Aishuang, from Xiangshan Village perschool of Wuhe Village, formed a teacher group. This teacher group conducts teacher group activities once a quarter. In this group study, Mrs. Yang will share her experience and knowledge. At the same time, Mrs. Yang will also go to the class where Shang Boai and Chen Aishuang are located every quarter to guide their work. Mrs. Yang always encourages everyone to apply what they have learned, find their own characteristics in rural preschool in combination with local characteristics, and carry out their own special activities in preschool classes, which greatly enriches children's study life in preschool classes.

Mrs. Yang has always loved her career. She said, "The knowledge I learned at school is very limited, and my current skills are gradually learned from the practice in society." "Everyone has to learn, and if they don't learn, they will be eliminated." She is very grateful for the training that the project can give, and will try to support other village teachers in her teacher group.

Rural teachers are also an important part of rural education. HPP pays more attention to teachers' growth while supporting the development of rural children, and provides training and guidance for teachers from teaching and management skills, supporting more core teachers, so that core teachers can drive more rural teachers to grow.
