Creating a sustainable and replicable poverty alleviation and development model for improving the livelihoods and living standards of China’s central and western rural populations is at the centre of the Bayer China and the State Council Leading Group Office of Poverty Alleviation and Development’s Foreign Capital Project Management Center’s cooperation project.  The project is executed in 4 villages of Chongqing’s Wanzhou district: Yudu village, Shiping village, Longtou village and Hema village. As a community based project, the project office works on propelling the development of local economics, education, health & hygiene and other social sectors. Among the aforementioned, health & hygiene is given special importance – the HPP team has been actively engaged in health promotion and training with the community and received praise for their work.

For the protection of local environment and the beautification of the village, the project initiated village “Clean-up” initiatives in Shiping village, Hema village and Yudu village in the months of July and September.  “Clean-up” included hygiene trainings, collecting trash from the rivers, tidying up public spaces and school grounds. The initiative goes beyond the usual training classes: all villagers were mobilized to participate in the “Clean-up”– students, teachers, parents, village volunteers, project staff. The initiative instils good hygiene and environmental protection habits for the children, allows parents to participate in their children’s growth, and cultivates a sense of pride for villagers who are given a chance to contribute to their hometown, while also emanating a sense of communal warmth and positivity for elderly people to feel a sense of inclusion. Let’s all participate, roll into action!
