Villager groups like Changjiaba, Xiaojie Village, Xundian County are located on both sides of Niulan River which has abundant sources of irrigation water. Rice cultivation has always been traditional plant cultivation of these villages. However, villagers has been cultivating rice based on previous cultivation experience for a long time. with price rising of agricultural materials including rice seeds, chemical fertilizers and pesticides and the rising costs of workforce, the economic benefit of rice cultivation is getting lower and lower. Even so, rice cultivation has direct relation with villagers’ rations and food security. Villagers also think it’s convenient for them to cultivate grains than buy them, and they may also eat them without any worry. In places with irrigation conditions, villagers are willing to cultivate rice every year. Villagers in Xiaojie Village cultivate rice covering 100 to 200 mus every year. Therefore, it has positive significance to carry out rice precise and quantitative cultivation in Xiaojie Village.

On the one hand, carrying out rice precise and quantitative cultivation may improve economic benefit of rice cultivation, reduce half seeding quantity based on previous conditions, as well as reduce workforce that needs for rice cultivation. Use technical measures like cultivating strong seedlings, extending rows and reducing seedlings, alternate dry-wet irrigation and integrated pest management to construct high quality rice population and realize comprehensive objectives of high yield, high quality, efficient and safe production.

On the other hand, as the demonstration project of climate-smart agriculture, its main objective is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions like methane emission during agricultural production process. it will reduce methane emission and realize greenhouse emission reduction by carrying out precise and quantitative management of rice irrigation water and adopting alternate dry-wet irrigation.

Taking the above issues into consideration, we take carrying out rice precise and quantitative cultivation as the emphasis of demonstration project of climate-smart agriculture in Xundian County, Yunnan. In 2017, besides completing original objective of 60-mu rice precise and quantitative cultivation in Xiaojie Village, the project also raised funds from other channels and strived for realizing comprehensive promotion of rice precise and quantitative cultivation and make all rice cultivating villagers participate in the project and adopt rice precise and quantitative cultivation technology to cultivate rice. Through active publicity and mobilization, there are 130 families who have registered to participate in the project. The total cultivation area is up to 208 mus. The project almost covers all families that cultivate rice in Xiaojie Village.

We firmly believe that comprehensive promotion and application of rice precise and quantitative cultivation will improve the technical level of local rice cultivation, increase economic benefit of cultivating rice and reduce methane emission to make positive contribution to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and stop global warming.

Project Introduction:

The demonstration project of climate-smart agriculture in Xundian County, Yunnan is funded by The Global Environment Facility Small Grants Program supported by NUDP. The project is carried out in Xundian Hui and Yi Autonomous County, Kunming, Yunnan. It is launched on October 31st, 2016, and will last two years. The project is subordinate to Yunnan Environmental Development Institute and executed and operated by Humana People to People to promote crop production, increase earnings and cope with climate warming together with local villagers.

The project trains villagers about countermeasures of climate changes, advocates taking actions to reduce carbon emission, aims to improve the ability of 200 farmer households, local government and other beneficiaries, promote land management of sustainable agriculture and climate-smart agriculture, increases crop production and farmers’ revenue and increase carbon content of soil, reduces use of chemical fertilizer and promotes biological healthy development of land and local areas by adopting cultivation methods like agricultural diversification, interplanting and straw cultivation.
