过去10年，中国走过了不寻常的发展道路。 China has gone through an extraordinary journey over the past decade. 这10年中，有许多精彩的故事，而这些故事中，有许多是外国人的中国故事。他们在中国工作、创业、生活，以最近的距离和各自独特的视角，亲身经历、体会着中国点点滴滴的变化。 The last 10 years were filled up with tens of thousands of touching and inspirational stories. And many of them were, in fact, created by foreigners who live and work here with us. Their experiences, observations and thoughts have become decent footnotes of this ever-changing and progressing country. 近日，云南省南亚东南亚区域国际传播中心联合天目新闻、《浙江日报》海外版共同策划采访推出“东看浙江·西看云南”系列报道，从分居两省的外国朋友眼中看中国10年之变。 Recently, Yunnan International Communication Center for South and Southeast Asia (YICC) worked together with Tianmu Media and Zhejiang Daily (Overseas edition). As a result, a number of stories covering the life and thoughts of foreign residents in Yunnan and Zhejiang, respectively, have been filmed and written out. 迈克尔（德国） 做公益是我最大的快乐
Michael : Helping others makes me happy
迈克尔，来自德国多特蒙德。
Michael is from Dortmund, western Germany.
1987年，迈克尔来到上海复旦大学学习中文。期间，他骑着飞鸽牌自行车，从上海出发，跨越1100多公里到达武汉。这趟旅行让他深入了解了中国社会的方方面面。
In 1987, he came to the Fudan University in Shanghai to study Chinese. During his time in China, he traveled over 1,100 kilometers from Shanghai to Wuhan along with a heavy duty bike made by Flying Pigeon — China’s first ever bicycle manufacturer. This trip allowed him to gain knowledge about various aspects of the Chinese society at the time.
而后，迈克尔先后在土耳其、以色列、哥伦比亚、印度等国参加志愿工作。
Over the past decades, Michael has worked as an international volunteer in a number countries across the globe, including Turkey, Israel, Columbia, Lebanon, Zimbabwe and India.
2005年，迈克尔回到中国，来到云南负责临沧市临翔区的艾滋病防治项目。借助之前的防治模式与经验，当地艾滋病感染人数大幅下降，取得了明显效果。
Michael came back to China in 2005. He kicked off a program which aims at better controlling and preventing the HIV in Linxiang district, southwest Yunnan’s Lincang. Drawing from the previous work experience in relation to this field, Michael and his team have effectively helped decrease the number of local people living with HIV.
后来，迈克尔又发起“未来希望”幼儿班项目，为云南乡村幼儿提供必要的学前教育。迈克尔还启动了一个低碳学校试点项目，让孩子们了解气候变化对人类的重大影响，增强保护环境、保护地球的意识。
Later, he launched another program named “Hope of Future.” It focuses on providing necessary pre-school education to the children in Yunnan’s rural areas. And today, Michael is also dedicated to raising the public awareness on environmental protection and climate change, especially among children.
如今，迈克尔在云南已经生活了10多年，回顾这些年走过的路，迈克尔表示，“对我来说，通过公益活动帮助别人，是最大的快乐。”
Having been working and living in Yunnan for nearly 20 years, Michael says he will continue to help other people through volunteering programs, simply because this is where happiness comes from.
